US History for the general reader
September 5, 2010
I re-read this book before my visit to the States this year. It doesn’t shirk the task of explaining just how much tension even violence occured as successive waves of immigrants were absorbed and new land acquired. For example, the Chinese in the West and Irish in the East. Nor of course does he ignore the story of the forced immigration from Africa. Yet it remains a concise book ideal for the visitor.
